격려 가득담아 등급에 따라 1인당 500달러부터 2,000달러까지

박 이사장 “장학생 여러분이 다른 사람의 햇빛이 돼달라”당부

워싱턴주 주류사회에서 활동하는 미국내 최대 한인기관인 대한부인회(이사장 박명래)가 미래 인재양성을 추진해왔던 장학사업이 어언 ‘1세대’(30년)을 이어오게 됐다.  올해로 29회째인 장학금 수여식이자 장학생 시상식이 지난 13일 열린 가운데 올해도 청소년 꿈나무 9명에게 사랑과 격려를 가득담은 희망의 장학금이 전달됐다.

대한부인회는 13일 레이크우드 본사에서 켈리 류(나은성) 평생교육원장이 사회를 보는 가운데 제29회 장학금 수여식을 가졌다. 이날 영광의 대한부인회 장학생으로 선발된 학생들은 대니엘 이, 엘리아 신, 조앤 송, 미리앰 이, 노엘 홍, 라이언 홍, 케일럽 박, 에나 차, 애나 룬드 학생 등 9명이다.

9명 가운데 8명이 한인 학생이고 한 명은 미국계 학생이다. 부인회 장학금이 한인사회만 아닌 다양성을 추구하기 위해 외국계 학생도 포함됐다.

부인회는 교육학 박사인 박명래 이사장과 신경자, 김민희, 김헬렌 이사 등 모두 4명으로 심사위원단을 구성해 공정하고 엄정한 심사를 통해 최종 장학금 수혜자를 선정했다. 

사회를 맡은 켈리 류 원장은 “심사위원들이 지원 학생들의 성적 및 AP수강 등 학업성취도 봉사활동 등 과외활동, 지역사회 봉사가 자신에게 미치는 영향이나 시련을 극복한 내용 등을 담은 에세지, 추천서 등 4가지를 평가해 선정했다”고 설명했다. 

이같은 선정 결과 1등급을 받은 대니엘 이 군에게는 2,000달러, 2등급을 받은 엘리아 신 및 조앤 송 학생에게는 1,500달러, 나머지 학생 6명에게는 1,000달러와 500달러가 전달됐다.

부인회는 자체 장학기금에다 뱅크오브호프, US메트로뱅크, 유니뱅크는 물론 김경숙 전 이사장과 켈리 류 평생교육원장이 장학금 기부를 하면서 장학생과 장학금을 늘릴 수 있었다고 설명했다.

이날 장학금 수여식에서 박명래 이사장과 피터 안사라 사무총장의 격려사도 감동적이었다는 평가를 받았다. 

박 이사장은 “오늘 장학금을 수상한 여러분은 공부를 열심히 한 것도 있겠지만 무엇보다 성실했다는 것을 증명한 것”이라며 “특히 자녀들을 지켜봐준 부모들, 함께한 친구들도 큰 힘이 되었을 것으로 함께 감사를 드린다”고 말했다.

박 이사장은  “대학에 가면 주변의 많은 사람들이 요구하거나 주장하는 내용이 있더라도 이를 고려만 하고 바로 받아들이지 말고 자신이 어떤 사람이 되고 싶은지 스스로 결정하기 바란다”며 “스스로 결정한 길 위에서 성공해 이 자리에 다시 와서 후배들에 돌려주고, 다른 사람의 햇빛이 되어주길 바란다”고 당부했다.

피터 안사라 사무총장도 “대한부인회를 대신해 축하를 전한다”고 말한 뒤 자신의 경험담을 털어놨다. 그는 “나도 여러분 처럼 다른 배경에서 자란 가족(이민자 가정)의 일원이었다”면서 “14살 반때 맥도날들에서 일을 했고, 17세에 미군에 입대해 25년간 공군에서 복무를 하면서 유혹과 어려움이 많았지만 그때마다 옳은 길을 선택하기 위해 노력해왔다”고 말했다.

안사라 사무총장은 “유행이나 외부 자극을 따라가기 보다는 자기 내면의 평화를 지키고 유지하면서 스스로의 길을 개척하길 바란다”며 “세상은 더 많은 용기를 필요로 하니 팔로워가 되지 말고 리더가 되길 바란다”고 당부했다.

Korean Women’s Association Awards Scholarships to Next Generation of Leaders

Nine students honored at 29th annual ceremony with scholarships up to $2,000

The Korean Women’s Association (KWA), one of the largest and most respected Korean American organizations in the U.S., marked nearly a generation of nurturing future leaders through education by hosting its 29th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 13 at its headquarters in Lakewood, Washington.

A total of nine outstanding students were awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000, based on their academic achievements, leadership potential, community involvement, and personal essays. This year’s recipients include:

Daniel Lee, Ellia Shin, Joanne Song, Miriam Lee, Noel Hong, Ryan Hong, Kaleb Park, Yena Cha, and Anna Lunde.

Eight of the recipients are Korean American students, while one is from a non-Korean background — a reflection of the organization’s growing commitment to diversity and inclusion in its outreach and educational initiatives.

Dr. Myung Park, Chair of the KWA Board, led the scholarship committee alongside fellow board members Kyung Ja Shin, Min Hee Kim, and Helen Kim. Scholarship selections were made following a rigorous evaluation of academic records, AP coursework, extracurricular involvement, community service impact, and personal statements.

Daniel Lee, recognized as the top-ranked recipient, was awarded $2,000. Ellia Shin and Joanne Song received $1,500 each as second-tier honorees, while the remaining six students were awarded $1,000 or $500, depending on evaluation outcomes.

In her opening remarks, Kelly Ryu, Director of KWA’s Lifelong Education Center, highlighted the importance of community-driven support for the scholarship fund. Contributions came from Bank of Hope, US Metro Bank, UniBank, and private donors including former KWA Chair Kyung Sook Kim and Kelly Ryu herself.

The ceremony also featured heartfelt speeches by Dr. Park and Peter Ansara, Secretary-General of KWA.

Dr. Park praised the recipients for not only their academic accomplishments but also their integrity and perseverance. “You’ve shown us that success is not only measured by grades but also by character,” she said. “As you move forward into college and beyond, I urge you to make your own decisions about who you want to become. And one day, may you return to this community as a source of light for others.”

Ansara, drawing from his own life as a first-generation immigrant and U.S. Air Force veteran, shared a personal message of resilience and leadership. “I started working at McDonald’s when I was just over 14 and later joined the military at 17, serving for 25 years,” he said. “Throughout all the challenges, I tried to stay true to what was right. The world needs courage — be a leader, not a follower.” 

Now in its 29th year, KWA’s scholarship program continues to inspire and uplift young people across Washington State — a testament to the enduring vision of a community that invests in its future one student at a time.
