그레이스 혜원 브라운 변호사, 4년 임기 문화예술 위원회 커미셔너로 임명돼

가족 모두 한복입고 선언문 수령한 뒤 한국 말로 “같이 갑시다”로 연대 당부

시애틀 한인 2세가 백인들이 장악하고 있는 커클랜드시의 커미셔너로 임명됐다. 

주인공은 시애틀ㆍ벨뷰통합한국학교를 운영하고 있는 한미교육문화재단의 윤부원 이사와 론 브라운 변호사 부부의 딸인 그레이스 혜원 브라운(Grace brown) 변호사이다. 

그레이스 브라운 변호사는 지난 달 커클랜드시로부터 오는 2029년 3월까지 4년 임기의 문화예술위원회 커미셔너로 임명됐다. 

그레이스 브라운 변호사를 포함해 모두 7명의 봉사직인 커미셔너들은 커클랜드시의 다양한 예술과 문화 프로그램에 대한 전반적인 정책 자문을 해줄 뿐 아니라 시의 예술작품 구입과 관련된 자문도 해준다. 또한 시의 공공예술 컬렉션을 관리ㆍ큐레이팅하면서 일정 예산 이상이 소요되는 시 사업에 대해서는 ‘1% 예술 할당제’를 관장하면서 지역 커뮤니티 단체 및 민간개발업자들과 협력해 공공예술 프로젝트를 확대하는 업무도 맡는다.  

그레이스 브라운 변호사가 커클랜드시 문화예술위원회 커미셔너로 임명된 사실은 커클랜드시가 지난 6일 밤 시 청사에서 5월을 ‘아시아태평양의 달’(AAPI)로 지정하는 선언문(Proclamation)을 채택하는 행사를 진행하면서 알려졌다. 

그레이스 브라운 변호사는 커미셔너가 된 뒤 백인 위주의 도시인 커클랜드시가 5월을 AAPI달을 선포하도록 추진했으며 이날 행사에서 시의회로부터 선언문을 대표해 수령했다. 

커클랜드시는 현재 인구가 9만 2,000여명에 달하며 이 가운데 17% 정도가 아시아 태평양계인 것으로 알려졌다. 

이날 커클랜드시의회에서 열린 선언문 채택 행사에는 그레이스 브라운 변호사는 물론 남편인 존 김 박사(내과전문의), 4명의 자녀에다 어머니인 윤부원 이사까지 모두 한복을 곱게 입고 참석해 큰 주목을 받았다. 

그레이스 브라운 변호사는 선언문을 수령한 뒤 감사 인사를 통해 “선언문이 채택될 수 있도록 큰 힘이 돼준 켈리 커티스(Kelli Curtis) 시장과 닐 블랙(Neal Black) 시의원을 포함해 모든 시의원과 시직원들, 이 자리 참석자들 모두에게 감사를 전한다”면서 한국어로 “같이 갑시다”를 외쳐 큰 박수를 받았다. 

그레이스 브라운 변호사는 미국 명문 리버럴 아츠인 앰허스트 칼리지를 졸업했으며 대학 3학년 당시 어렵기로 소문난 백악관 연두교서과에서 인턴(빌 클린턴 대통령시절)을 지냈으며 대학 졸업후 주한미국대사관 상무관 주니어로 근무하기도 했다. 이후 조지타운대 로스쿨에 입학해 변호사가 된 뒤 워싱턴DC 대형 로펌에서 수년간 근무하다 결혼 후 커클랜드에 정착했다. 

과거 한인생활상담소 청소년리더십 프로그램의 단골 강사로 참여해 한인 후배들에게 리더십과 네트워크의 중요성을 알려졌으며 최근에는 자녀들이 다니고 있는 벨뷰통합한국학교 학부모회에서 1년간 부회장으로 봉사하기도 했다.

Grace Haewon Brown Becomes Cultural Arts Commissioner; Receives City’s AAPI Month Proclamation

On May 6, the City of Kirkland adopted its proclamation designating May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Brown accepted the proclamation on behalf of the AAPI community at a City Council meeting. 

Grace Haewon Brown, a lawyer and community leader, has been appointed as a Cultural Arts Commissioner for the City of Kirkland. Her four-year term runs through March 2029.

Brown, the daughter of Buwon Yoon—executive board member of the Korean American Educational & Cultural Foundation—and attorney Ron Brown, brings with her a strong background in public service and law. 

As one of seven volunteer commissioners, she will help guide Kirkland’s arts and culture initiatives, including advising the city on public art acquisitions, managing art collections, and expanding public-private collaborations through the city’s “1% for Art” ordinance.

Her appointment was announced during a historic moment: on May 6, the City of Kirkland adopted its proclamation designating May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Brown accepted the proclamation on behalf of the community at a City Council meeting.

Kirkland, with a population of over 92,000, is home to a growing AAPI community, which now comprises roughly 17% of its residents.

Brown’s entire family—including her husband Dr. John Kim, an internal medicine physician, their four children, and her mother—attended the event dressed in traditional Korean hanbok, symbolizing cultural pride and intergenerational unity. 

Upon receiving the proclamation, Brown thanked Mayor Kelli Curtis, Councilmember Neal Black, other council members, and City staff for their support, encouraged them to continue to suporrt the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, and closed her remarks by saying in Korean, “Gachi Gapsida”—“Let’s go together”—a message of solidarity that drew a round of applause.

A graduate of Amherst College, Brown interned at the White House during a time of the State of Union address with the Clinton administration and later worked at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. After earning her law degree from Georgetown Law, she spent several years at two international law firms in Washington D.C. before settling in Kirkland with her family.

Brown is also known for her community involvement, having mentored youth through Korean-American leadership programs and She also served as PTA vice president for one year at the Bellevue campus for the United Seattle Bellevue Korean School.

With her appointment, Brown not only brings greater representation to Kirkland’s civic landscape but also inspires a new generation of Korean Americans to serve and lead.
