KSA 커리어 심포지엄에 유명 한인 인사들 나와 진심 어린 조언해줘

워싱턴대(UW) 한인학생협회(KSAㆍKorean Student Association)가 지난 27일 캠퍼스내 학생회관(HUB)에서 개최한 ‘커리어 심포지엄’이 화제 속에 성공적으로 진행됐다. 

자타가 인정하는 서북미 최고 명문인 UW에는 한국에서 유학을 와서 한국어가 더 편한 학생들로 조직된 한인학생회(KSUㆍKorean Student Union)가 있고, 미국에서 태어났거나 어렸을 적부터 미국에서 자라 영어가 더 익숙한 학인학생협회(KSA)가 있다. 

중학교 졸업과 함께 이민 와 현재 UW 3학년인 박준서군이 회장을 맡고 있는 KSA가 이날 개최한 커리어 심포지엄은 한인 학생들이 장차 자신의 직업을 선택하는데 도움을 받기 위해 시애틀지역 각 분야에서 활동하고 있는 선배들을 초청해 마련한 행사였다.

이를 위해 시애틀한국교육원(원장 이용욱)과 UW 출신인 김주미 소장이 이끌고 있는 한인생활상담소(KCSC)와 UW 한국학센터(소장 하용출 교수)가 후원을 맡았다. 

이날 강사나 패널로 나온 인물들도 시애틀지역 유명 한인들이 총집결하다시피했다. 

서은지 시애틀총영사, 정상기 킹 카운티법원 판사의 부인인 오화선 UW 치의대 교수, 이승영 변호사, ‘한국인 최초 우주인’인 이소연 박사, 샘 조(한국명 조세현) 시애틀항만청 커미셔너, 유명 벤처캐피탈 회사인 썰카도 매니지먼트(Cercano Management)의 파트너인 YB 최씨, 척추전문의인 에드워드 정씨, 시애틀지역 한인 IT전문가들의 모임인 창발의 안혜선 회장(MS근무) 등이 나왔다. 

서은지 총영사는 이날도 “한국이 지난해 미국에 가장 많은 투자를 한 나라였다”고 강조하면서 1953년 1인당 국민소득이 67달러에 불과했던 대한민국이 지난 2023년 기준 1인당 국민소득이 3만7,670달러로 늘어났다고 강조했다. 여기에다 미국내 134개 대학이 한국프로그램을 도입하고 있다고 강조하면서 학생들의 모국인 대한민국이 이제는 당당하고 자랑스러운 선진국임을 자랑스럽게 여기도록 당부했다. 

서 총영사는 특히 이날 자랑스러운 ‘코리안 아메리칸’의 표본으로 앤디 김 연방상원의원과 미디어스타트업인 피스컬노트 최고경영자(CEO) 티모시 황, 그리고 유명 요리사인 에드워드 리를 소개했다. 앤디 김에게는 한국 전통인 ‘예의범절’을 통한 성공 사례를, 티모시 황에게서는 혁신과 비전, 그리고 에드워드 리에게서는 한국인이라는 정체성에 대해 강조했다. 

이날 강사와 패널들도 주옥같은 조언들을 쏟아냈다. 

오화선 교수는 “서두르지 말고 시간을 갖고 자신에게 주어진 선택권을 찾아가길 바라며 특히 ‘내가 어떤 열정을 가지고 있는지, 내가 무엇을 좋아하는지’를 따져봐 진로를 결정하라”고 당부했다. 

7살때 이민을 왔지만 완벽한 이중언어를 구사하며 봉사와 리더십에서 한인 2세대들의 롤모델로 평가받는 이승영 변호사는 자신이 UW에서 학부(기계공학), MBA, 로스쿨 등 3개의 학위를 갖고 있다고 설명하면서 힘들었지만 순간순간 과감하게 결정했던 자신의 삶의 이야기들을 풀어냈다. 이 변호사는 “젊었을 때는 ‘주변 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향을 준다’는 목표로, 아버님이 돌아가신 이후에는 ‘커뮤니티에 영향력을 주는 사람이 되자’는 자세로 살아왔다”고 설명했다. 

우주인에서 MBA에 이어 이제는 비지니스 개발 등에도 참여하고 있는 이소연 박사는 “여러분 스스로에게 자부심을 갖고 특히 다른 사람에 좋은 사람이 되기 위해 노력해달라”고 당부하면서 “혼자가 아닌 다른 사람과 함께 일하는 것이 중요하다”고 강조했다. 

한국에서 성신여대 국문과를 졸업한 뒤 캐나다 이민 등을 거쳐 세계 최고 기업인 마이크로소프트(MS) 소프트웨어 엔지니어가 된 안혜선 회장, 유명 벤처투자가인 YB 최씨, 유명 의사인 에드워드 정씨도 자신의 경험을 들려주며 후배들의 진로에 아낌없는 조언을 했다.

이날 강사나 패너들은 다양한 주제로 이야기를 했지만 한결같이 “가장 중요한 것은 사람이고, 그들과의 좋은 네트워크를 쌓아야하며, 무엇보다 소통능력이 자신의 커리어를 쌓아가는데 최고로 중요하다”고 강조했다.

KSA 박준서 회장은 “이날 심포지엄을 통해 우리 한인 학생들이 커뮤니티의 한인 리더들로부터 자신의 꿈을 펼치기 위한 계획을 짜는데 큰 도움을 받았을 것"이라고 감사를 전했다.

 

 

Korean-American Leaders Inspire UW Students at KSA Career Symposium

The University of Washington’s Korean Student Association (KSA) hosted a highly successful Career Symposium on February 27 at the Husky Union Building (HUB). The event, which brought together some of the most accomplished Korean-American professionals in Seattle, provided students with invaluable insights and heartfelt advice on building their careers and shaping their futures.

A Gathering of Inspiration and Guidance

Organized by KSA President Junseo Park, a third-year student who immigrated to the U.S. after middle school, the symposium aimed to connect Korean students with prominent figures in various fields. It was designed to help attendees navigate their professional journeys by learning directly from accomplished community leaders.

The symposium received strong support from the Korean Education Center in Seattle, led by Director Yongwook Lee, as well as the Korean Counseling Service Center (KCSC), headed by UW alumna Joomi Kim, and the UW Center for Korea Studies, directed by Professor Yong-chool Ha.

The Power of Heritage and Networking

Consul General Eunji Seo emphasized Korea’s global influence, noting that the country was the largest investor in the U.S. last year. She highlighted Korea’s extraordinary economic growth, from a per capita income of just $67 in 1953 to $37,670 in 2023, encouraging students to take pride in their heritage. She also pointed out that 134 U.S. universities now offer Korean programs, reflecting Korea’s growing cultural impact.

Seo also shared success stories of notable Korean-Americans, including U.S. Senator Andy Kim, FiscalNote CEO Timothy Hwang, and celebrity chef Edward Lee. Each of these individuals, she explained, exemplifies key traits that lead to success: courtesy and discipline, innovation and vision, and a strong sense of cultural identity.

Words of Wisdom from Industry Experts

The speakers offered invaluable career advice based on their personal experiences:

Professor Hwasun Oh encouraged students to take their time in making career decisions, emphasizing the importance of discovering one’s passions and interests.

Attorney Cheyl Lee, a UW graduate with three degrees, shared his journey of making bold career choices and balancing multiple fields of study. He spoke about his shift in perspective after losing his father, which motivated him to make a greater impact on his community.

Dr. Soyeon Yi, who transitioned from being Korea’s first astronaut to earning an MBA and working in business development, urged students to take pride in themselves and to focus on teamwork, emphasizing that success is never achieved alone.

Hye-sun Ahn, a graduate of Sungshin Women’s University who immigrated to Canada before securing a role at Microsoft, shared her journey of perseverance and adaptation.

Venture capitalist YB Choi and Dr. Edward Jung also offered insights into their respective fields, providing students with practical guidance on breaking into competitive industries.

The Key to Success: People, Networks, and Communication

While each speaker had a unique background and career path, they all emphasized a common theme: the importance of relationships, networking, and communication. Whether thriving in corporate America, making a mark in public service, or innovating in STEM fields, they stressed that the ability to connect with others and articulate one’s ideas effectively is crucial to career success.

A Lasting Impact on UW’s Korean Students

Reflecting on the event’s success, KSA President Junseo Park expressed his gratitude: “This symposium gave our students a chance to hear from Korean community leaders and plan their futures. It’s a huge step toward helping them pursue their dreams.”

As the symposium concluded, attendees left with renewed motivation and a clear message: success is built on the foundation of strong relationships, strategic networking, and effective communication—timeless lessons from some of the most accomplished Korean-American professionals in Seattle. The event not only reinforced the strength of the Korean-American community but also highlighted the power of mentorship and shared experiences in shaping the next generation of leaders.
