한인꿈나무와 타민족 학생들까지 참석해 대성황

서은지 총영사 시상식에 참석해 학생들 격려해 

 

재미 한인과학기술자협회(KSEA) 시애틀지부(회장 브라이언 맹)가 지난 15일 4년만에 대면으로 개최한 수학.과학경시대회가 역시 큰 인기를 끌었다. 당초 예정했던 대회 장소가 마이크로소프트(MS)에서 벨뷰칼리지로 바뀌었지만 별다른 혼란없이 한인 꿈나무는 물론 타민족 수학우등생들에다 학부모, 자원봉사자까지 300여명이 운집해 그야말로 대성황을 이뤘다.

미 전국에서 실시된 수학경시대회에는 오전에 치러졌고, 오후에는 초등부, 중등부, 고등부로 나뉘어 팀을 이뤄 주어진 과학 문제를 해결하는 과학 경시대회가 열렸다. 

또한 수학경시대화와 과학실습대회가 열리는 시간동안 학부모들을 대상으로하는 세미나도 함께 열렸다.

오전에는 3명 UW 대학생들이 학부모들을 대상으로 대학 입시 준비에 대한 경험담을 공유했고 오후에는  서수빈 워싱턴주립대(WSU) 교수와 네이버 수석과학자인 김동찬씨, 마이크로소프트 매니저인 안진만씨가 강사로 나와 AI가 교육과 미래에 직업에 미칠영향 주제로 이야기를 나눴다. 

수학경시대회를 만들어 현재까지도 주도하고 있는 김재훈 박사와 MS 임헌민(워싱턴주 서울대동창회장)씨 등도 나와 대회 및 시상식 등을 도왔다.

이날 시상식에서는 학년별 1등 1명, 2등 2명, 3등 3명이 선정됐고, 1등에게는 워싱턴주지사상, 2등에게는 마이크로소프트상, 3등에게는 시애틀 총영사상이 각각 주어졌다. 특히 9학년부터 11학년까지 1등 수상자에게는 유니뱅크 장학금 500달러씩도 전달됐다.

올해 대회에서 영광의 1등은 시안 박, 매티스 김, 비수누 만기푸디, 사무엘 박, 최수혁, 앤드류 김, 글렌 박, 전세이 학생에게 돌아갔다.
