워싱턴주 한미변호사협회 제 35회 연례만찬 200여명 성황

한인 법조인 총출동속 정상기 판사 감동적인 기조연설 전해

워싱턴주 한미변호사협회(KABA)가 지난 19일 시애틀 페어몬트 올림픽 호텔에서 개최한 제35회 연례 만찬행사는 주류사회에서 활동하고 있는 한인 법조인들에게도 한결같이 그 뿌리인  ‘코리안 아메리칸이라는 공동체의식’이 가득함을 확인하게 해줬다.

시애틀지역에서 활동하고 있는 변호사는 물론 판사와 검사 등 법조인에다 리사 매니언 킹 카운티 검사장, 존 전(한국명 전형승) 워싱턴주 연방항소법원 판사, 서은지 시애틀총영사, 샘 조 시애틀항만청 커미셔너는 물론 KABA와 오랫동안 협력하며 후원을 아끼지 않고 있는 한인생활상담소(소장 김주미), 광역시애틀한인회(회원 김원준) 등도 자리를 함께 했다. 

시애틀지역 TV방송국인 King5의 새런 유 기자가 사회를 보는 가운데 200여명이 자리를 가득 메운 가운데 진행된 올해 만찬행사는 무엇보다 2먼4,000달러에 달하는 장학금이 예비법조인에게 전달돼 의미를 더했다. 

특히 초등학교때 미국으로 이민와 자신을 1.5세라고 표현하면서 한인교회에 출석하고 있을뿐 아니라 KABA를 창립한 킹카운티 법원의 정상기 판사가 감동적인 기조연설을 전해 아낌없는 박수가 쏟아졌다.  

한인 1세대들과도 지속적인 교류와 연대를 해온 제시카 유 변호사가 ‘올해의 멘토상’을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 

지난 1년간 KABA를 성공적으로 이끌었던 김예진 회장은 유창한 한국말과 영어로 한국의 정(情)을 주제로 공동체 정신과 연대의 가치를 강조해 깊은 공감을 얻어냈다. 

김 회장은 “한국에서 성장하고 미국에서 삶을 일구며 전통 한국 문화와 미주 한인 사회가 발전시켜 온 문화를 모두 경험할 수 있었다”며 “어디에 살든 우리 공동체에는 공통적으로 깊은 관계를 맺고 서로를 돌보는 힘이 있다”고 말했다. 특히 ‘정’을 영어로 정확히 번역하기 어렵지만, 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 쌓이는 배려와 공감, 유대의 감정을 의미한다고 설명했다. 김치를 넉넉히 담가 이웃과 나누는 모습, 새 동네로 이사 온 이들과 밥을 나누며 관계를 쌓는 모습, 1997년 외환위기 당시 국민들이 금 모으기 운동에 동참해 나라를 도왔던 사례 등을 언급하며 “공동체는 저절로 주어지는 것이 아니라 우리가 적극적으로 만들어가는 것”이라고 강조했다.

정상기 판사도 기조연설을 통해 한인 법조인 공동체의 출발과 ‘프로보노(Pro Bono)’ 정신, 그리고 일에서의 진정한 보람에 대해 진솔하게 이야기했다.

정 판사는 연설 서두에서 초기 한인 이민자들이 겪었던 어려움과 공동체의 현실을 가까이에서 목격했다고 회고했다. 당시 한인 사회에는 언어 장벽과 정보 부족으로 법적 문제를 제대로 해결하지 못하는 사례가 많았고, 특히 청소업 프랜차이즈 분쟁, 이민 문제, 사기 사건 등으로 어려움을 겪는 동포들이 적지 않았다고 말했다.

교회에서 변호사라는 사실이 알려지며 매주 이혼ㆍ이민 등 각종 상담을 도왔던 경험도 소개했다. “제가 전문으로 하지 않는 분야였지만, 도움을 요청하는 분들을 쉽게 외면할 수 없었다”며 “그분들의 표정은 제가 처음 미국에 와 깊은 물속에 던져진 듯한 느낌을 받았던 시절을 떠올리게 했다”고 했다.

이러한 문제의식 속에 1992년 몇몇 한인 변호사들이 모여 무료 법률 클리닉을 시작했고, 이것이 KABA의 출발점이 됐다. 같은 해 4월 LA 폭동은 한인 사회에 큰 충격을 안겼고, 젊은 전문직 종사자들이 공동체에 더 적극적으로 기여해야 한다는 자성의 목소리도 커졌다. 이후 한인생활상담도(KCSC)와 협력해 본격적인 무료 법률 상담을 시작했고, 점차 더 많은 변호사들이 참여하며 조직이 성장하게 됐다고 설명했다. 

정 판사는 “35년 전 우리가 가진 것은 완벽한 준비가 아니라, 언어와 법률 지식이라는 작은 재능을 공동체와 나누겠다는 마음이었다”며 “앞으로도 KABA가 의미와 보람을 추구하는 법률 공동체로 계속 성장하길 바란다”고 당부했다. 그는 “진정한 행복은 서로의 삶을 나누는 데서 온다”며 연설을 마무리했다.

멘토상을 수상한 제시카 유 변호사도 “학생들과 후배들과 커피를 많이 마신 기억밖에는 없는데 이 상을 받을 자격이 있는지 모르겠다”면서 “이 상은 멘토를 계속 찾고, 또 누군가의 멘토가 되라는 다짐의 의미로 받겠다”고 말했다. 유 변호사는 특히 “우리 법조계에서 누구도 혼자 길을 걷고 있다고 느끼지 않도록 하자”고 강조했다.

KABA는 ‘케이트 시브라이트 장학재단’고 함께 데니엘 엄, 사만타 나, 스캇 안, 그레이스 박, 린다 주 등 로스쿨에 재학중인 5명의 학생에게 적게는 2,000달러, 많게는 1만 달러까지 장학금을 전달했다. 

KABA는 김예진 회장에 이어 올해 협회를 이끌 새 회장으로 브라이언 로 변호사를 선출했다. 

한편 KABA는 지난해 제니 곽 변호사를 회장으로 하고, 제니퍼 손 변호사 를 회계로, 이진규ㆍ김예진 변호사를 위원으로 하는 KABA 재단을 출범시켰다. 

Five Law Students Awarded $24,000 in Scholarships at KABA’s 35th Annual Gala

Jessica You Named Mentor of the Year as 200 Gather to Celebrate Community and Service

The Korean American Bar Association of Washington (KABA) held its 35th Annual Gala on February 19 at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, drawing more than 200 attendees and showcasing the enduring strength of the Korean American legal community.

The evening brought together attorneys, judges, and prosecutors from across the region, along with prominent civic leaders including King County Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Manion, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge John Chun, Consul General Seo Eun-ji of Seattle, and Port of Seattle Commissioner Sam Cho. Longtime community partners such as the Korean Community Service Center (KCSC) and the Korean American Association of Greater Seattle were also in attendance. The event was emceed by KING 5 reporter Sharon Yoo.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of $24,000 in scholarships to five law students—Daniel Eum, Samantha Na, Scott An, Grace Park, and Linda zhu—in partnership with the Kate Seabright Scholarship Foundation. Individual awards ranged from $2,000 to $10,000, underscoring KABA’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of legal professionals.

King County Superior Court Judge Samuel Chung, a founding member of KABA who immigrated to the United States as a child and describes himself as part of the “1.5 generation,” delivered a moving keynote address. Reflecting on the early days of the Korean American community, Judge Chung recalled how language barriers and limited access to legal resources left many immigrants vulnerable to exploitation and legal hardship.

He shared how, in the early 1990s, a small group of young Korean American attorneys began offering free legal clinics to serve the community. The 1992 Los Angeles riots further galvanized their efforts, prompting a renewed sense of responsibility among young professionals to give back. In partnership with KCSC, the fledgling organization expanded its pro bono services, laying the foundation for what KABA has become today.

“What we had 35 years ago was not a perfect plan,” Judge Chung said. “It was simply a willingness to share our knowledge of the law and our language skills with the community. True fulfillment comes from sharing our lives with others.”

Jessica Yu was honored with the 2026 Mentor of the Year Award in recognition of her decades-long dedication to mentoring attorneys and law students. A graduate of Seattle University School of Law (J.D.) and the University of Washington (LL.M.), You has been active in the Seattle legal community for over 20 years. She previously served as KABA president, as legal advisor to the Korean Consulate in Seattle, and has been a member of KABA’s advisory board for the past decade.

In her acceptance remarks, You humbly reflected, “When I learned about this recognition, I tried to think of what I had done to deserve it. All I could come up with was that I’ve had a lot of coffee with students and colleagues.”

She emphasized that mentorship is not limited to senior attorneys guiding younger ones. “We are all both mentors and mentees,” she said. “Let’s make sure no one in our profession feels they are navigating alone.”

Outgoing KABA President Yejin Kim also drew strong applause for her bilingual address centered on the Korean concept of Jung(정)—a deep sense of empathy, connection, and shared responsibility within a community. Having grown up in Korea and built her life in the United States, Kim spoke of experiencing both traditional Korean culture and the uniquely Korean American community spirit.

“Community is not something we inherit automatically,” she said. “It is something we actively build.” She illustrated jeong through everyday acts—sharing food with neighbors, building bonds in new neighborhoods, and collective efforts such as Korea’s gold-collection campaign during the financial crisis. She urged members to “carry Jung with us and continue caring for one another.”

The gala also marked a leadership transition. Brian Rho was elected as KABA’s new president, succeeding Kim. In addition, KABA formally introduced the KABA Foundation, launched last year with Jenny Goak as president, Jennifer Sohn as treasurer, and board members Jinkyu Lee and Yejin Kim.

As the evening concluded, attendees left not only celebrating professional achievements but reaffirming a shared identity rooted in service, mentorship, and a deep sense of community.
