Street vs. Avenue
avenue는 대개 남북으로 난 비교적 큰 길을 말하고 street는 동서로 난 비교적 작은 길을 말한다고 한다. 도시에 따라 Avenue의 방향이 남북과 상관없을 때도 더러 있다고 하는데 아무튼 avenue와 직각으로 교차되는 도로가 street다.
<15312 NE 8th St.>이란 주소가 있다면 앞의 세 자리 수는 8번가와 교차되는 153번가의 Avenue 번호라고 할 수 있다. 마지막 두 자리 수 12는 그 블록 안에서의 그 집의 위치를 나타낸다. 예를 하나 더 들자면, 집의 번호가 123이면, 1은 교차하는 거리이고 23이 블록안에서 집의 번지다.
집의 번지는 길 한쪽은 홀수번호를 사용하고, 다른 한쪽은 짝수번호를 사용한다. 보통, 길이 동서로 뻗어 있으면 길의 북쪽은 홀수번호, 남쪽은 짝수 번지로 되어 있고, 길이 남북으로 뻗어 있을 때는 서쪽이 홀수 번지이고, 동쪽이 짝수 번지로 되어 있다.
이러한 개념을 알고 있으면 낯선 곳에서 지도가 없어도 길 찾기가 수월하다.

Eunmi: How does the American house numbering system work?
Karen: The house numbering system is basically a grid system.
For example if your address is 15312 NE 8th street, then the first 3 numbers of the address tell you that your address intersects with 153rd avenue.
So the grid of 153rd avenue and NE 8th street is the block you live on and the last 2 digits are your house number which is 12.
Usually the streets run east-west and the avenues run north -south.
Eunmi: It sounds like a piece of cake to find any house in the city.
Karen: One more thing, house numbers are even on the south and east sides and odd for houses on the north and west sides of the road.
