“외국 학생들도 한반도 통일과 코리아에 관심 많아”(+동영상, 화보)


평통 시애틀협의회, 한반도 평화통일 발표대회에 17명 참석

우수한 작품 낸 8명에게 금ㆍ은ㆍ동상, 지도교사 3명 공로상

 

평통 시애틀협의회(회장 김성훈)가 미국 주류학생을 대상으로 한반도 평화통일 및 코리아에 대한 관심을 고취시키기 위해 실시한 한반도 평화통일 발표대회가 인기리에 진행됐다. 한반도 평화통일의 필요성과 중요성을 한국인이나 한인끼리만 인식하고 있는 차원을 떠나 미국 주류사회에도 공유를 하자는 취지로 마련된 행사였다.

평통 시애틀협의회는 지난 23일 페더럴웨이 코앰TV에서 ‘한반도 평화통일 발표대회 및 시상식’을 개최했다. 이 자리에서 타코마 마운트 타호마고교 9학년 유옌 현(Uyen Huynh)양이 금상인 시애틀총영사상을 수상했다.

페더럴웨이 디케이터고교 11학년 안드리아 허난데즈양과 타코마 베이커중학교 7학년 아미아 알렉산더 로스 학생이 은상인 시애틀협의회장상을 받았다.

마운트 타호마고교 10학년 미켈라 팔렉 학생과 9학년 헤이든 응우옌 학생, 베이커중학교 7학년 빅토리아 타크 학생, 마운트 타호마 고교 10학년 메디슨 미코브치 학생과 베이커 중학교 자코베 오우 학생이 각각 동상인 시애틀협의회장을 받았다.

평통 시애틀협의회는 이날 미국 주류학교에서 교사로 근무하며 한국어 교육에 최선을 다하는 한편 이번 한반도 평화통일 발표대회 참가자들을 지도한 페더럴웨이 인터넷 아카데미의 정동순 교사와 타코마 마운틴 타호마고교 이남희 교사, 베이커 중학교 신경자 교사에게도 공로장을 수여했다.

이번 대회는 평통 시애틀협의회 김필재 청년위원장이 총괄해 기획하고 준비해 치러졌으며 주류사회를 대상으로 하는 공공외교로도 큰 역할을 했다는 평가를 받았다.  

평통 시애틀협의회 교육위원장인 박명래 박사는 “대회에 모두 17명의 학생이 참가했으며 엄정한 심사를 거쳐 8명을 수상하기로 결정했다”면서 “한반도 평화통일과 코리아에 대한 관심을 갖고 앞으로도 주변 친구들에게 이를 잘 알려달라”고 당부했다.

김성훈 평통 시애틀협의회 회장은 “미국 청소년들에게 한반도의 분단과 한반도 평화통일에 시각과 인식을 알아보는 위한 목적으로 이번 대회를 처음으로 개최했다”면서 “다시 한번 대회에 참석한 학생과 지도교사 등에 감사를 드린다”고 말했다. 김 회장은 "우리 모두 한반도 평화 통일을 위한 최선의 솔류션을 찾아보자"고 제안했다.

안현상 시애틀 부총영사도 축사를 통해 “현재 북한은 핵 개발 등에 열을 올리고 있으며 한국은 북한의 비핵화 등을 위해 힘쓰고 있다”면서 “이런 가운데 한반도 평화통일 발표대회를 개최하게 돼 감사드린다”고 말했다.

 

2022 Korean Peninsula Peaceful Unification Presentation Contest Award Ceremony on April 23rd

“Local students are also very interested in Peaceful Unification on the Korean Peninsula” (+video, pictures)

 

Seventeen students participated in the Korean Peninsula Peaceful Reunification contest sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of PUAC(Peaceful Unification Advisory Council).

At the award ceremony, 8 students were given Gold, Silver, or Bronze awards for outstanding presentations, 3 teachers received Contribution Awards.

The Peaceful Unification Presentation Contest of the Korean Peninsula, was held by the PUAC-Seattle Chapter (President Seong-hoon Kim). This event was prepared with the purpose of sharing the necessity and importance of peaceful reunification on the Korean Peninsula with Washington State public school students and residents, not only among Korean Americans.

On April 23rd, the PUAC- Seattle Chapter held an Awards Ceremony at KOAM TV in Federal Way. At this event, Uyen Huynh, a 9th grader at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, was awarded the Seattle Consul General Award(a gold award) with $500 scholarship.

Andrea Hernandez, a junior from Decatur High School attending Korean class at the Internet Academy in Federal Way, and Amiah Ross, a 7th grader at Baker Middle School in Tacoma, received the PUAC-Seattle Chapter President's Award (Silver Awards) with $300 scholarship.

Mikaela Palecek (10th), Hayden Nguyen(9th), Madisen Mirkovich(10th) from Mt. Tahoma High School, Jacobe Ou (7th) and Vivian Thach(7th) from Baker Middle School in Tacoma, each earned a bronze award with $200 Scholarships from the PUAC-Seattle Chapter’s President.

The PUAC-Seattle Chapter recognized 3 teachers who work as Korean teachers at local public schools in the Washington State for their dedication to teaching Korean, including promoting this competition and assisting the participants with their presentations. Dongsun Ball, a teacher at the Federal Way Internet Academy, Nam-hee Lee, a teacher at Tacoma Mt. Tahoma High School, and Kyung-ja Shin, a teacher at Baker Middle School received the certificates of recognition. 

This event was planned and prepared by PUAC- Seattle Chapter’s Youth Chairman Pil-jae Kim. This event was successful that it played a big role spreading their mission of PUAC to the mainstream society.

Dr. Myung-rae Park, chairman of the education committee of the Seattle Chapter, said, “A total of 17 students participated in the contest, and 8 winners were selected after rigorous screening. Please let your friends know this great event.”

Seong-hoon Kim, president of the PUAC-Seattle Chapter, said, “We held this contest for the first time with the purpose of giving American youth a perspective and perception on the division of the Korean Peninsula and the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula.” President Kim suggested, "Let's all find the best solution for the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula."

Hyon-sang Ahn, deputy consul general of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle delivered a congratulatory speech, “North Korea is currently developing nuclear weapons, and South Korea is promoting for North Korea’s denuclearization.”

He said, “I am grateful to have held the contest for the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula in the midst of this division.”
